Background & Why the festival exist!

Public space is for everyone. Founded in 2010, Stockholm Street Festival exists to celebrate this space, to use it, and to guard it by putting public performance on the cultural political agenda in Sweden and Scandinavia. Through the festival we work to boost awareness among the general public about street arts and performance, as well as to influence our politicians and decision-makers. Since founding the very first edition, we have kept our performances free of admission so that the festival really can be for everyone – whatever their social class, economic status, or ethnicity.

The policies and laws that affect public space are constantly being debated by politicians and their parties. To build a strong foundation for street art and street performance we need to protect what we already have, while instiling a positive attitude towards the art form that will help it to flourish in the future. We need cultural funding to establish good infrastructure and stronger networks for street art in Scandinavia.

With a focus on artistic quality, we programme the festival with some of the world’s most talented street performers, drawing on both traditional buskers and the new art of street performance. We also work with the current generation of contemporary circus performers, many of them educated at specialist universities, who give performances adapted to the street environment. The growth of this kind of work is a fantastic development, and one we plan to continue to support and give a special platform to at Stockholm Street Festival.

We also focus on artists such as street painters and graffiti artists, 3D painters, street musicians, and street dancers.

To widen the diversity of the festival we invite exhibitors and food providers to set up market stalls, bringing the atmosphere of a multicultural festival. SSF is a place for audiences from around the world to meet one another and enjoy a shared experience.
